Minister to attend equality event

THE North East Chamber of Commerce will stage a seminar called Business is Good for Equality on Thursday January 31 at Lumley Castle, Chester-le-Street, with Minister for Women and Equalities, Jo Swinson as guest speaker. Attendees will have the chance to explore with a legal expert some common issues faced by business in dealing with discrimination law, share intelligence and tips on how equality benefits their businesses.

The event, which is part of the Chamber's national road show focusing on small business and equality, will be chaired by Nickie Gott, of the NECC’s Women’s Advisory Board and owner of event management company She’s Gott It.

Ms Swinson, said: “What women need is confidence, not quotas. So rather than telling companies what to do, we’re encouraging them to see the real business benefits of taking voluntary action. Our approach is beginning to pay off.
“We have already seen the biggest ever jump in the number of women on boards and it doesn’t stop there. Many of the UK’s leading companies are now reporting on gender equality throughout their workforces under our Think, Act Report scheme and the Women’s Business Council is investigating how to help remove barriers to female success. This ongoing work will help even more women rise to the top and give the economy a real boost.”
