SUNDERLAND is the best place in the UK to do business, according to a new report.

The city has been highlighted by the Municipal Journal, which praised its skilled workforce and high quality, low cost business premises.

The city, whose employers include Japanese car manufacturer Nissan, Barclays and EDF, has welcomed more than 40 private-sector investment projects in the last two years, creating about 4,000 jobs.

Councillor Paul Watson, Leader of Sunderland City Council, said: “Despite tough times, new jobs are being created, and there are strong levels of public and private sector investment.

“Sunderland is good at is getting both the infrastructure and the business environment right.

“We have always forged strong links with the private sector and these links have made the city's economy far more diversified, robust and resilient.”
