Sedgefield firefighter Simon Wilkinson sets up chimney sweep business
A FIREFIGHTER turned chimney sweep says he hopes to create North-East jobs after launching a new venture.
Simon Wilkinson, from Sedgefield, County Durham, has set up The Complete Sweep to cater for the growing number of people using open fires and wood burning stoves.
Mr Wilkinson became interested in the career five years ago after buying a multi-fuel stove and needing a sweep to clean his chimney.
He built up knowledge of the profession by doing work experience in his spare time and passed Guild of Master Sweeps exams to become an organisation member.
He now carries out services such as traditional sweeps and nest and blockage removal, and although acting as a sole trader, says he hopes to employ workers and expand the company.
He said: “It's taken a while, but I now have everything in place to completely focus on the job.
“The timing is good with the autumn and winter approaching and the demand for qualified sweeps is increasing.
“Being a retained firefighter in Sedgefield also means I can offer customers fire safety advice.”
