BLOCKBUSTER, the DVD and games rental chain, is to close down completely after failing to attract a buyer.

Branches in Darlington, Hartlepool, York, Newcastle and Sunderland are among the remaining 91 stores, employing 808 people, which administrators Moorfields Corporate Recovery said would have to close.

In total, 54 jobs are being axed in the North-East.

All stores will have ceased operations by December 16 , Moorfields said.

All remaining stock will be sold by Sunday December 15, with up to 90 per cent discount.

Blockbuster had 264 stores and a 2,000-strong workforce when it went into administration in October for the second time this year, but these have now all disappeared.

"It is with regret that we have to make today's announcement, we appreciate this is a difficult time for all concerned and would like to thank staff for their professionalism and support over the past month," said joint administrators Simon Thomas and Nick O'Reilly.

"Unfortunately, we were unable to secure a buyer for the group as a going concern and as a result had to take the regrettable action to close the remaining stores."
