A CRAFT supplies firm has created new apprenticeships.

Crafter's Companion, in Coundon, near Bishop Auckland, County Durham, has taken on students Luke Whitfield, Jake Davison and Samantha Davison.

Bosses say 17-year-old Luke will work as a marketing assistant, with 20-year-old Jake recruited as a warehouse assistant, and Samantha, 21, working in a business administration role.

Luke and Samantha are both studying business and administration NVQ qualifications at Bishop Auckland College and were recommended by tutors to apply for their roles.

Jake found his role through an apprenticeship website and works full-time in Crafter's warehouse while studying an NVQ in logistics and distribution.

Sara Davies, founder of Crafter's Companion, which designs, makes and supplies craft products for enthusiasts across the world, said it was important to help youngsters in the region.

She said: “We love hiring apprentices from the region because they have that thirst for knowledge and can get to grips with the business quite quickly.

“We run a large operation, so there is a lot to take in, but Luke, Jake and Samantha are settling in really well.”

Crafter’s Companion also has sites in the US and mainland Europe, including a sales team in Holland, and employs about 60 workers.

Set up by Mrs Davies, who last month won a Silver Stevie Award for Young Female Entrepreneur of the Year, the business sells products through retail outlets, online and TV shopping channels, and works with brands such as The Snowman.

Earlier this year, it agreed a deal to send thousands of its flagship paper crafting tool, The Ultimate, to Michaels Stores, which has outlets across the US and Canada.
