WORKERS at a frozen meat company could strike in a dispute over holiday cutbacks, a union has warned.

Staff at ABP Wessex, in Leeming Bar, North Yorkshire, will bosses today to discuss potential reductions in paid breaks.

Unite the union says management want to buy out extra holiday days accrued by ABP's 150-strong workforce for long service.

It added the firm also wants to write union recognition agreements out of employees’ contracts.

ABP Wessex did not reveal the details of any proposed changes to The Northern Echo, but confirmed it is in discussions with staff.

The company makes frozen beef, lamb and pork burgers, grill steaks and sausage.

Sarah Mitchell, Unite regional officer, said: “These proposed changes are detrimental to the workforce.

“Our members have unanimously rejected the unacceptable changes and requested we proceed to an industrial action ballot.

“We hope to reach an agreement with management, thus negating the need for industrial action.

“However, our members are strongly committed to getting an acceptable and fair settlement, and this includes taking industrial action.”

An ABP spokesman added: “We are in discussions with our staff representatives and are not in a position to comment at this time.”
