SUPERMARKET Asda is cutting more than 1,000 jobs in an overhaul of its store management.

Bosses say 1.360 posts are at risk.

The move comes two months after the chain warned 4,100 positions were under threat as it reduces back office jobs and introduces more shop floor roles.

It said the new structure will create 1,662 section managers and 4,000 section leaders.

Redundancies will come from staff who don't meet selection criteria or choose to leave.

Asda chief executive Andy Clarke said: "Every supermarket must adapt to the intense changes in UK retailing or they will get left behind.

"While I genuinely believe it's the right decision for Asda's future, knowing it will result in valued workers leaving is not easy.

"As much as it is my job to be chief executive of this business and do what's right for it, this is one of the most difficult decisions I've had to make."

Rival Morrisons made a similar announcement last month when it said it would axe 2,600 jobs to remove layers of management.

The big four supermarkets, including Tesco and Sainsbury's, are all being squeezed by discounters Aldi and Lidl and upmarket Waitrose.
