A CONFERENCE has heard this week how systems which stop carbon dioxide from entering the atmosphere could deliver a huge jobs boost to the North-East.

Tees Valley Unlimited (TVU) estimate that Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) could create 4,000 jobs in the Tees Valley.

The Government has allocated TVU £1m to investigate whether CCS could be used in the area.

By making industry and manufacturing more environmentally sustainable CCS can also protect tens of thousands of steel and chemicals jobs, the Carbon Capture Future for Europe event in Edinburgh heard.

Jude Kirton-Darling, Labour Member of the European Parliament for the North-East, represented the region at the conference.

She said: ""The development of CCS and the associated infrastructure further develops our long history of heavy industry and energy production which today employs thousands in the region, particularly across the Tees Valley - my home area - and our North Sea position and the offshore oil and gas network links."
