AN EXPANSION to one of the most famous grounds in British football is among £43m of contract wins scored by steel firm Severfield.

Work on the home of Liverpool FC in conjunction with Carillion will add about 8,500 seats to the Main Stand and increase the overall capacity of the stadium to 54,000. It is scheduled for completion around the start of the 2016-2017 Premier League season.

Severfield has built up a track record in major sports stadia developments following work on London 2012 Olympic venues, the Emirates Stadium for Arsenal Football Club, and Wimbledon's Centre Court roof.

The Anfield deal is one of six major contracts recently secured by the structural steel group based at Dalton, near Thirsk, North Yorkshire.

The other work includes commercial office developments in London; a major distribution centre in the Midlands; and a waste-to-energy plant in Dublin.

Ian Lawson, the chief executive of Severfield, said: "We are delighted to announce these multiple contract wins. It continues the momentum we’ve established in recent months, and all of these new contracts are in sectors where we have a strong market share or are seeing positive future trends.

“We are thrilled to be working for Carillion on such a high profile project as Anfield, especially as stadia is a sector where we have a demonstrable track record.”
