AN airline is increasing flights from a North-East airport.

Jet2 says it will launch its largest ever holiday programme at Newcastle Airport next summer.

Bosses say the changes will deliver more than 750,000 seats, with further flights to destinations such as Alicante, Crete, Gran Canaria and Majorca.

They added the increase will see a seventh aircraft based at Newcastle in 2016, with a larger plane also needed to provide more seats to popular routes like Faro and Ibiza.

Steve Heapy, Jet2 chief executive, said: “This is going to be our biggest season ever.

“We know what our loyal customers want; more opportunities to go on holiday to their favourite destinations.

“That’s why we’re adding an aircraft and increasing capacity and flights to our most popular routes from Newcastle.”

The announcement comes just days before the airport starts direct flights to New York.

United Airlines’ services to Newark are due to begin on Saturday, running five-days-a-week until September 7.
