STAFF at a North-East Barclaycard centre are among hundreds nationally facing losing their jobs.

Barclaycard yesterday said it had started a 90-day consultation that could see the loss of 288 jobs in the UK and some work moved overseas.

It includes 11 employees at the firm’s Stockton centre, who deal with business customers.

Barclaycard said no final decision had been made and it aimed to redeploy people where possible.

If the plans go ahead, there could also be 77 job losses in Northampton and about 200 in Wavertree, Merseyside.

In a statement, the company said: “It’s impossible at this stage to say how many jobs may eventually be transferred.

“Although some 285 colleagues will potentially be affected across the three sites, the individual proposals are each independently subject to a consultation period and there are expected to be opportunities for redeployment in all the centres.

“In Northampton, for example, where Barclaycard employs the vast majority of its UK workforce, some 30 roles would also be created as part of the proposals.”

Rob MacGregor, national officer of the Unite union said the news would “devastate”

workers, adding: ‘‘This decision comes just one week after Barclays slashed another 1,000 jobs.

“At this time of economic uncertainty, why isn’t this UK finance company doing all it can to support its workforce in the UK, not telling them their work will now be done in India.”
