On the road: IT’S not often that a car’s interior surpasses its exterior, but that’s certainly the case with the Audi TT Coupe. That’s not to say that the German sports car is not good looking – far from it. With its curves and purposeful stance, it certainly draws attention.

IT’S taken awhile, but Europe finally seems to have fallen for the whisper-quiet charms of Lexus. In the first six months of 2014 the marque notched up a record 25.4 per cent increase in European sales, making it the fastest growing premium brand across the continent.

THE LEON CUPRA SC reminds me of the original Subaru Impreza Turbo. Of course, as a daily driver the Cupra better in every way than the old chewing-gum-and-string Subaru, but it reminds me of the classic Impreza in other ways.

LET’S be honest. Compact SUVs like the Nissan Juke might look the part, but they aren’t much good off road. In fact, you may as well be in a Ford Focus for all the good the Juke’s macho looks would do you traversing a muddy field or creeping over a cratered rock bed.

IT took British Leyland a lifetime to sell five million Minis. And, thanks to the British motor industry’s aversion to actually developing its cars, by the time the Mini reached that figure it was on its last legs.

IS it really 16 years since the Focus saved Ford's bacon in Europe? Until 1998 buyers who wanted a C-segment Ford had to make do with the increasingly grim Escort, a sort-of lowest common dominator hatchback for the terminally unadventurous.

THE stylish Sportbrake isn't the first estate model from Jaguar, that honour fell to the X-Type several years ago, but it is long overdue. All Jaguar’s rivals have had an estate in their premium saloon ranges for a couple of decades.

HOW do you replace an icon? Porsche and Volkswagen managed it with the 911 and the Golf respectively, but Renault couldn’t come up with a like-for-like replacement for the Supercinq and Peugeot has spent 30 years trying to build a ‘new’ 205 GTi.

IF YOU don’t experience the same kind of feeling you did during your first schoolyard kiss on clapping eyes on Alfa’s MiTo then check your pulse. If you do be sure to keep that in mind when you’re driving it.

WHAT'S the most protracted car name ever? Take a deep breath and welcome the Renault Megane Sport Tourer GT Line Tom Tom Energy dCI 130. With a name as long-winded as that they'd need an extra-wide boot if the full name were attached to it.

On the road: THE Leon benefits from being built on the same chassis as the VW Golf and Audi A3 and as such bears many of their characteristics, including above average handling and a ride that should suit most drivers. On occasions it can be deceptive, in a positive note, driving not unlike a saloon. The 1.4 TSI engine is quiet and refined and has enough power for every situation.
