Young swimmers ready to compete for county glory

NEARLY 150 primary schoolchildren will compete for swimming glory this week.

Durham County Council’s second Primary Schools Gala involves 144 pupils from 12 schools taking part on Friday, January 29, at Freeman’s Quay leisure centre, in Durham. The youngsters, aged seven to 11, will contest 12 individual races and one team event.

Two winning schools from each of the School Sport Partnership swimming galas – held in Chester-le-Street, Derwentside, Durham, Easington, Sedgefield and Wear Valley and Teesdale – have qualified for the event.

They include Durham St Margaret’s CE Primary, Durham Blue Coat CE Juniors, Wolsingham Primary, Green Lane CE Primary in Barnard Castle, Cestria Primary in Chester-le-Street, Chester-le-Street CE Juniors, Burnopfield Primary, Consett Juniors, and Coxhoe Primary School.

All children taking part will receive a certificate and the best three in each race will get a medal.

The overall winning school will receive a trophy from Coun Dennis Southwell, the Mayor of Durham.
