Death row – that’s a big deal, can you tell us about it?

We had an opportunity to travel to America to work with lawyers to try to get the sentences of those convicted of capital crimes commuted to life without parole. I was inspired by Sister Helen Prejean (her life was made into the film Dead Man Walking starring Susan Sarandon) who came to Glasgow University to speak to us about human rights and why her campaign against the death penalty was so important. It was the most intense and most important time in my life.

From death row inmates to comedy audiences, how did that happen?

I studied law and then went on the practice as a solicitor for seven years. My 30th birthday came and went and I realised that if I didn’t make a change soon I never would. So I resigned from my firm and gave comedy a go. Some say it was a brave decision, more people say it was stupid.

The Mad Cat Lady moniker suggests that you may have a few cats?

Three cats. They’re really my children. Being selfemployed I spend most of my day in the house on my own. They’re exceptional company and rarely answer back. I sponsor several monkeys, donkeys, bears, dogs, penguins and seals.

Who looks after them while you are on tour?

My wife has a proper job so stays at home with the little darlings while I’m away. I’m sure they miss me when I’m off on tour. They probably won’t look like they do, but they will. I hope.

What is the biggest comedy gaffe you’ve ever made?

I once gave away the score of a football match when half the audience seemed to have been recording it for later. Suffice to say it was a quick gig.

Who is your hero (dead or alive)?

There are so many people I’ve admired and looked to for inspiration. Sister Helen is one, Helena Kennedy, Molly Weir, French and Saunders, Billie Jean King. But probably the person I’ve adored for many years, simply because of who she was and what she is, is Marlene Dietrich. She oozes style and class.

Proudest moment so far?

Probably the two series of my own Radio 4 show, Susan Calman is Convicted. The audiences who listen to the radio are some of the best I’ve ever encountered and the feedback I’ve received has been so amazing.
