THE fifth annual Croft Circuit Nostalgia Weekend takes place on Saturday and Sunday, exactly 50 years to the date of the inaugural Daily Mirror Trophy Meeting at Croft Autodrome in 1964.

Organised and run by the Historic Sports Car Club, it is a popular fixture on the motor racing calendar every year since 2010.

Its 1940s-1970s theme regularly features at least 250 single-seaters, saloons, GTs and sport scars.

Alongside the 18 races scheduled during the two days, there is every bit as much going on off the track too, making the Croft Nostalgia Weekend an attraction for all the family.

A late addition to the event is Brian Johnson, singer with AC/DC whose hits include Highway to Hell, Back in Black and You Shook Me All Night Long.

The hard-rocker will take part in the Historic Touring Cars class driving a 1964 Mini Cooper that he bought last year to use in his TV series Cars That Rock with Brian Johnson.

He recalls visiting Croft to watch an MG race in the mid-1960s.

The Florida-based Geordie is a regular competitor in historic events in the US and Europe.

Johnson has also been the “Star in a Reasonably Priced Car” on popular BBC2 motoring show Top Gear.

Among the vehicles on display this year will be a Jaguar E-type, Brabham, Cooper and Lola singleseaters, Lotus Cortinas and a flamespitting Chevrolet Camaro.

Other attractions will be collections of rare classic cars and motorcycles, Second World War machinery, living history encampments and air displays from a variety of jet and propellerpowered aircraft harking back to times gone by. There is a fashion show through the ages, facepainting and the opportunity to enjoy a 1940s-style makeover and hairdo.

Mike Cantelo, manager of the circuit, says: “The Nostalgia Weekend is one of the acknowledged stand-out jewels in Croft’s crown.

“It is a flavour of yesteryear – although don’t forget, each and every one of the cars present was a pioneer in its day.”
