An isolated house perched on a Cornish cliff, a stormy night, a power failure and an evil twin – what’s not to like about Simon Williams’ spooky thriller?

Well…it’s not terribly thrilling, for one thing. It’s perfectly amiable, with some amusing dialogue in particular from Judy Buxton as daffy Aunt Lalla, but instead of hurtling towards a gripping climax it meanders gently to the inevitable conclusion.

That’s not to say that the actors don’t do a good job; Brian Capron is workmanlike as DI Fergus and has some entertaining exchanges with Buxton, while Kim Tiddy is so self-effacing as Nurse Malahide you just know she has a trick up her sleeve.

It’s Tom Butcher, though, who must take the honours as this month’s hardest-working actor. Playing both the twins he goes into the lift in a wheelchair as Ashley, coming down the stairs a few moments later as Max, and as the lights keep going out we’re never sure whether he’s the shadow outside the window, or has taken his place in the wheelchair. This does present one or two production challenges; Ashley first appears in a balaclava ‘for medical reasons’ and it’s fortuitous that both twins have identical dress sense.

The whole premise of the plot is that only one of the twins can survive, but it’s not clearly explained why they can’t both lead separate lives and live to a ripe old age. So if you’re an identical twin, beware – your sibling may be out to get you!
