When ghd, king of the straightening iron, launches a new Curve Collection for waving, the beauty world listens. There are four new wands available, all sleek and black and shiny. But while the two Tongs and Creative Curl Wand look similar to other tools I have in my curling kit, the Classic Wave Wand immediately stands out.

Firstly, it has an oval-shaped barrel, designed to create deep, glamorous waves that are virtually impossible to achieve with a home blow-dry. With Veronica Lake as my muse, I switch on the new ghd and am met with a satisfying trill and flash of white light around the power sign. There's another sound seconds later, to inform me that the wand has reached optimum curling temperature, 185-degrees C.

I hold my hair around the smooth barrel for around eight seconds, and slowly release to unveil 'the' most perfect, cascading wave. This isn't a curl, or boho texture, it's the wave I have been trying to create for the last 10 years. The tri-zone ceramic technology means there is no snagging or pulling. It's basically the Rolls-Royce of waving wands.

The same week, I discover the Classic Wave Wand being used backstage at London Fashion Week for House of Holland's show. Adam Reed, ghd global brand ambassador, gives me a model demo on how to create a lived-in wave, dubbed the 'run-wave'. By rolling the wand up and down each section of hair, backwards and forwards, the 'classic' wave is instantly transformed to mussed-up bends.

With texture this good, I may well be waving goodbye to my straight hair forever.

AGEING ANGST

One in three British women feel under pressure to look young. The average age women are most worried about how old they look is 39.5 years, according to a survey by Sanctuary Spa Wonder Oil Serum. One fifth worry about their age every day, and 41% wished they looked younger. Wrinkles (70%) were voted the top indicator of turning old.
