Sir Bobby to do honours

SIR Bobby Robson is starting a
sponsored walk for his charity
in the village where he learnt to
play football.
He will get Bobby's Walk
under way at Langley Park
Cricket Club at 11am on
Sunday, June 1.
The six-mile charity walk has
been organised by Crescent
Homecare, which provides care
for seriously ill people in their
homes. Money raised will go
towards the Sir Bobby Robson
Foundation, which has raised
about £400,000 for cancer
research.
It was launched earlier this
year by the former Newcastle
and England manager, who was
born in Sacriston and played for
Langley Park Juniors as a boy.
He aims to raise at least
£500,000 to create a cancer
research centre in the region.
Crescent Homecare was
founded by walk organiser
Geraldine Raggatt's mother,
Jean Taylor, in 1999. Mrs Taylor
died of cancer in 2003, so the
walk has been organised to mark
the fifth anniversary of her death.
Mrs Taylor met Sir Bobby in
1978 when he took the FA Cup
he won while manager of Ipswich
to Langley Park Cricket Club.
Ms Raggatt said: "Sir Bobby is
such a fabulous man and he is a
real inspiration, so we are happy
to support him. We decided that
we wanted to do something in
my mother's memory, and this is
the perfect thing."
Ms Raggat hopes to raise
£5,000 for the foundation. It
costs £2.50 to take part. A buffet
will be available afterwards.
There will also be a raffle.
To sign up for the walk, call 0191-373-1538.
