Burglars target homes while owners are away
POLICE are investigating a spate
of burglaries in which householders
have been targeted while they
were away on holiday.
Jewellery and other valuables
were snatched from six homes
across Lanchester in a wave of
break-ins over the past month
and a half, all carried out when
occupants were away.
While thieves have mainly targeted
smaller items, televisions
and other large electrical goods
have also been stolen.
Police suspect that these incidents
may be linked and are
appealing for information.
Det Con James Somersall, of
Durham Police, said: "We advise
residents to invest in burglar
alarms and not to publicise the fact
that they are going on holiday."
He also advised residents to
keep valuables out of sight and
not to keep large amounts of cash
inside the house.
Neighbourhood Watch spokesman
Mick Kelly said simple and
practical precautions could be
taken before going on holiday.
He said: "Get to know your
neighbours. It makes a big difference
to have a neighbour you can
trust to make sure your curtains
are opened during the day, and
that newspapers and milk are not
left outside the house.
Police are asking anyone with
information about the Lanchester
burglaries to contact Consett CID
on 0845-60-60-365 or call Crimestoppers
on 0800-555111.
