LIKE many children his age, three-year-old amputee Robbie Jones loves Fireman Sam, so visiting a real fire station was a red letter day. Robbie, of Bowburn, who had both legs amputated after contracting meningitis went to Sunderland Central Community Fire Station on Saturday to receive money raised in an appeal to buy him artificial limbs. Firefighters on Green Watch were moved by his story and decided to support the appeal, which currently stands at about £100,000. Robbie has his first legs but, as he grows, he will need replacements. As well as meeting firemen, he sat in a fire engine and squirted water from a hose. His father, Wayne, said: “We are grateful to everyone who has helped, from £1 to £1,000.” Fireman John McLachlan said: “We decided to put some money in a pot and everyone at the station put money in and we raised about £170.”
