A HISTORY student has become
the fifth sibling to graduate
from Durham University.
In receiving her degree,
Maria Murphy, 21, followed in
the footsteps of brother James,
35, and sisters Anna, 29, Lucy,
27, and Ruth, 25.
It is the first recorded example
in the university's 175-year
history of five siblings from
the same family all graduating
from Durham.
Maria, a member of Castle
College, said: "I chose to apply
to Durham University because
I knew it was a great place,
and after visiting other places,
I realised just how special
Durham and Castle College in
particular really were.
"I feel that being the fifth
sibling to come to Durham
serves to show what a wonderful
and special place Durham
truly is."
During their studies the
Murphy siblings, who come
from Loughborough, were all
active in the university's
Catholic community.
Maria's sisters all studied
theology and played netball.
There are five grandchildren
in the family, and mother
Anne Murphy said: "I would
love to think of my grandchildren
attending the university
and being equally as happy."
Maria, who studied ancient
history, plans to do a year's
voluntary work before pursuing
a career in museum work
or teaching.
The family met travel writer
Bill Bryson, chancellor of
Durham University, at the
graduation ceremony.
Mr Bryson said: "This is a
tremendous accolade for
Durham University."
