Parents present club trophy in tribute to their son
THE parents of Hartlepool United
footballer Michael Maidens, who
died in a car crash last October,
received a standing ovation as they
paid tribute to their son, who
would have celebrated his 21st
birthday on Wednesday.
Doug and Heather Maidens
presented an award in their son's
honour at the club's annual player
of the year awards, on Tuesday
night.
His mother said: "We would like
to thank everyone from Hartlepool
Football Club for all the great
times Mike had, especially the
players. We have had such lovely
cards and letters. I've kept them
all. Thank you all very much."
The Goal of the Season award
was named in Michael's memory
only two years after the midfielder
won the trophy for a momentous
strike against Huddersfield
Town. His parents presented the
award to Joel Porter, who won the
fans' vote for the best individual
effort, which was at Victoria Park,
against Gillingham.
Mr Maidens, of Skelton, was a
former pupil of Huntcliff School,
Saltburn.
