A PRIMARY school that took part in the Olympics opening ceremony is celebrating after securing a top award.

Byerley Park Primary School in Newton Aycliffe’s contribution to PE and school sport was recognised as the best in the county at the County Durham Sport and Physical Activity Awards.

Alison Gargan, headteacher, said staff and pupils were delighted to win the award, which was presented at a special ceremony at the Xcel Centre in Newton Aycliffe last week. “As a school, we have all worked really hard to promote a wide range of opportunities for all our pupils in Sport and physical activities,” she said.

“Pupils have experienced such activities as rock climbing, archery, boccia and seated volleyball to name a few sports.”

She said the pupils had been taught the Olympic and Paralympic values of respect, equality, friendship, determination, excellence, courage and inspiration, adding: “Being part of the Opening Ceremony for the Olympic Games was the icing on the cake for us as a School community.”
