Volunteers create an oasis

VOLUNTEERS have worked hard to transform a bare field in Darlington into a garden for the whole community to enjoy.

Groundwork North East worked with Salters Community Garden Association to cultivate what used to be the Glebe Road school playing fields into a community garden.

The main contracting work is now complete and volunteers braved the rain on Friday to plant orchards and create raised flower beds.

Help came in the form of Cummins staff and Darlington Borough Council’s rangers who worked alongside members of the Garden Association and Groundwork.

The project is being funded through a £48,000 grant from the Big Lottery Fund’s Community Spaces programme, managed by Groundwork UK.
