AN outline application to build 425 homes and commercial premises on the site of a former County Durham factory has been approved.
Councillors at Durham County Council county planning committee meeting today (Tuesday, November 6) agreed to the plans by developer DTZ Leeds to build on the derelict former Electrolux site, in Merrington Lane, Spennymoor.
The scheme features mainly homes but also includes a care home, shopping area and other commercial facilities. The project has been backed by some people who feel it will revitalise the local economy but others want the land left for industrial use.
Barratt North-East is also considering a £60m scheme to build 366 homes on the site of the former Thorn factory, also in Merrington Lane.
