THE Olympic legacy will work its way north this month when a gold medallist  trains and inspires athletes at a series of workshops.

Jade Jones, who won taekwondo gold at the London 2012 Olympics, and her Team GB coach Paul Green will visit Spennymoor Leisure Centre, in Spennymoor, County Durham, on Sunday, November 18.

They have been invited by Spennymoor Taekwondo Club, home of Jones' sparring partner and 2016 Olympic hopeful Jamie Abley.

The club runs its weekly sessions at the Durham County Council-run centre.

The club’s leading coach, Master Russell Shaw 4th Dan, said: “As well as being able to meet one of the stars of London 2012, this is a unique chance for local youngsters to be inspired by and learn from the best.

“It’s been a huge effort from both the club and Durham County Council to make this happen and I would encourage taekwondo enthusiasts, whatever their level, and interested spectators, to take up this opportunity.”

Spennymoor Leisure Centre manager, Mark Lee, added: “This is a great opportunity for people to see a talented athlete at the height of their success.

“We hope that by hosting this event we can help to inspire the next generation of Olympic athletes.”

The event will include three workshops based on the current training methods used by Jade and taught by her coach.

They will be held from 9.30am to 11.30am, for five to 13-year-olds; noon to 2pm, for over 13s; and an advanced session from 2.15pm to 4.15pm, for chi taekwondo and other British taekwondo competitors.

Sessions are £20 and must be booked in advance through Spennymoor Taekwondo Club. Spectators welcome, tickets £2.50 in advance or £5 on the day.
