ORGANISERS of a major fireworks display in former mining town hope its success mean it will become an annual event.

Stanley Events’ first bonfire night celebrations at Oakies Field, near the town centre, was held on Sunday.

It featured a 23 minute display accompanied to music following the theme of the 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympics.

The £10,000 event was funded by Stanley Town Council and attracted around 6,000 people.

Durham County Councillor Carl Marshall said: “There was very positive reaction from the crowd. And although it was cold it did not rain.

“Given the excellent response and feedback we have had we are hoping it can be staged again in future years.”
