A MAN who glassed a fellow party-goer for no reason was today jailed for four years.

Ben Ferris carried out the attack as his victim and a pal were smoking outside the Royal Oak, in Cornsay Colliery, County Durham, where a 21st birthday party was taking place.

Durham Crown Court heard Ferris was among several people who emerged from the pub shortly after midnight, on April 7.

Ferris, high on drink and drugs, head butted one of the pair in the face and then thrust a half-pint glass into the second man's face.

His victim temporarily lost his sight.

He was taken by car to hospital, where he was treated for a deep cut to the cheek, near his right eye, plus cuts and abrasions to his nose and chin.

Stitches were inserted to the nasal bone and cheek, from where a fragment of glass was removed.

Mr Bennett said although his eye sight recovered, the victim, was left physically and psychologically scarred.

Tom Moran, mitigating, said: “We’re nowhere nearer having any proper understanding why someone who has never behaved like this before could do this.

“He says he can’t remember, partly due to the drink and drugs he took.”

Ferris, 23, of Quarry Crescent, Bearpark, near Durham, admitted wounding with intent.

Jailing him, Judge Christopher Prince told Ferris it was only “good fortune” that the victim was not blinded.
