A RACE night organised by two friends who battled cancer together has raised over £2,000 for charity.

The event, held at the East End Club in the town's Neasham Road, was organised by Darlington women Donna Lancaster, 50 and Lou Robinson, 44, who have been given the all clear from breast cancer and lymphoma respectively.

They were delighted with the support for the event last month, which sold 200 tickets and raised £2,500 to be shared equally by Breakthrough Breast Cancer and Macmillan Cancer Support.

Ms Lancaster said: “All in all we received 50 donations of prizes, we were absolutely overwhelmed by the generosity and kindness of the people of Darlington and wanted to thank each of them, and the people who came to support the night.”

She added: “We thoroughly enjoyed organising and holding the night and everyone was very generous and got into the spirit of it; even bidding on a bottle of whisky that raised £102, which was fantastic!

“We are already gathering ideas and prizes for our next charity night, which we are hoping to hold next spring.”

Middlesbrough FC and Northumbrian Water were among the larger organisations who donated raffle prizes alongside dozens of independent Darlington businesses.
