TOWN centre businesses were plunged into darkness for most of the day (Thursday, November 22) when a power cut affected about 120 properties and homes.

Shops and businesses at the south end of the High Street in Northallerton and homes on Romanby Road were left without power from about 5am until just after 4pm after a fault arose in an underground cable.

A spokeswoman for Northern Powergrid said a low voltage cable had fused near Romanby Road, which served many of Northallerton’s businesses and homes.

Contractors had to dig up the cable from underneath the road and put traffic management measures in place before they could tackle the problem.

Many businesses affected in Northallerton closed for the day.

The power cut also affected traffic lights and pedestrian crossings at the junction of Romanby Road and the High Street.
