AN events marquee will remain at a County Durham racecourse over the festive period, despite residents concerns over noise.

This week, members of Durham County Council’ south and west planning committee voted to allow the temporary marquee to remain at Sedgefield Racecourse until early January.

The marquee was put up earlier this month to house eight events, including a charity concert and three Christmas parties up to 11pm.

In total, 10 letters of objection and a 17-signature petition were received, with residents highlighting past noise problems caused by the venue.

Julia Bowles, chair of Sedgefield Village Residents Forum, argued councillors would pave the way for further outdoor events if they approved the application.

However, Jill Williamson, general manager at Sedgefield Racecourse, said she had fulfilled all planning requirements.

She said noise monitoring at last weekend’s charity concert for ABF the Soldiers Charity had revealed noise at the homes of nearby residents to be at an acceptable level.

Councillor Grenville Holland said: “I am surprised at the objections to the marquee. It is tucked away inside the racecourse and is not unsightly. The noise at properties 400 to 600 metres away is hardly going to be overwhelming.”

A vote was taken and the application was approved.

Speaking afterwards, Ms Bowles said: “I am amazed and appalled at attitude of councillors towards the feelings of residents. There was no discussion about imposing conditions. No wonder no-one has any faith in politicians.”
