THE man who fired the starting gun on Usain Bolt’s stunning 100m sprint victory at this summer’s Olympics has helped bury a time capsule marking his home county’s contribution to the London Games.

Olympics and Paralympics chief starter Alan Bell, from Chester-le-Street, joined school children from across County Durham to bury a time capsule marking the county’s part in 2012’s year of sport at Durham University’s Maiden Castle sports facility, near Durham City today (Monday, December 17).

The box contains details of young sports men and women, as well as leaders and volunteers, who have taken part in this year’s events.

Durham County Council chairman Linda Marshall also attended the event at the Graham Sports Ground.
