PLANS for a £27m regeneration scheme for a former ice rink have been submitted.
The consortium behind the Durham Riverside Renewal Project wants to build 4,000sq metres of office space, a restaurant and a cafe at Freeman’s Reach, the former home of Durham Wasps ice hockey team, in Durham city centre.
There would also be an energy project to harness the power of the River Wear.
The proposals have been subject to some public consultation and have now been submitted to Durham County Council for a decision.
The two applications can be viewed via the council’s online planning portal at durham.gov.uk, using the references CMA/4/90 and CMA/4/91/CAC The scheme is expected to go before a council planning committee in the next few months.
The site is currently home to a disused bowling alley.
One part of the proposed development would be occupied by National Savings and Investments, which plans to move from its offices in Milburngate House.
The second stage is dependent on tenants being found.
The developers have set up a website at durhamriversiderenewal.co.uk
