THE A1(M) has now reopened after being closed for almost four hours because of a fatal accident in County Durham.
The crash, which is thought to have involved a car and a pedestrian, took place at about 7pm between the A690 (junction 62) at Durham and the A167 (junction 63) at Chester-le-Street.
It led to the road being closed in both directions.
Durham Police confirmed the road re-opened at 11pm, but released no further details of the collision.
On Teesside, the A19 was closed in both directions between the A66 and the Portrack Interchange after police received reports of a male on a bridge near to Acklam at 8.26pm.
Cleveland Police said a distressed male was found and eventually talked down by trained negotiators.
He is now said to be receiving "appropriate care" and the road was reopened at 11.45pm.
