FREE sports festivals, taster sessions and exciting coaching opportunities will be offered at four sites across County Durham this year thanks to a major grant from a high street bank.

Durham County Council has secured a £35,952 grant from the Barclays Spaces for Sports fund to deliver tasters, festivals and subsidised weekly sports sessions at Trimdon Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA), Chilton Tennis Courts, Hackworth Tennis Courts and Middlestone Moor MUGA.

The funding will also cover the cost of sports coaches known as Sports Activators and will support the Volunteer Durham scheme, which offers a 50 per cent subsidy for coaching qualifications and encourages people to put something back into their communities..

Since 2006, Barclays has invested more than £290,000 into the four sites, working closely with its partner the Football Foundation to ensure they continue to make a positive impact..

Deborah Holmes, sport and physical activity development manager at Durham County Council, said: “The Barclays Spaces for Sports funding over the last five years has developed new and accessible sporting facilities and opportunities in the area.

“This additional funding will provide new and exciting sporting activities for local people and help the sites to become more sustainable.”

Since its launch, the Barclays Spaces for Sports Scheme has created 200 community sports sites in the UK.
