VOLUNTEERS are wanted to inspect two North-East prisons.
An appeal has been made for new members of the Independent Monitoring Boards (IMBs) for Low Newton and Durham prisons, both in Durham City.
Duties include sampling the food, as volunteers are tasked with ensuring prisoners are treated decently and humanely.
Low Newton IMB chair David Brand said: “In effect members are the eyes and ears, at the institution, of ministers and of the public.
“Being a board member promises endless opportunities, with introductions to all manner of characters on both sides of the cell doors.
“Although the role can be tough, demanding and challenging, it never fails to be extremely rewarding and worthwhile.”
IMBs meet monthly and submit annual reports to the Secretary of State.
The role takes up time equal to two to three days per month. All necessary training is provided. Applicants should ideally live within 20 miles of the prison involved.
