THE future Archbishop of Canterbury kept a promise to attend a service in Bishop Auckland.

More than 200 people gathered on the Feast of Epiphany for the Circuit Covenant Service at Bishop Auckland Methodist Church.

The superintendent minister, the Reverend Keith Phipps was joined by the Bishop of Durham, the Right Reverend Justin Welby who was the preacher.

Rev Phipps said: “Bishop Welby had been invited to conduct the service some time ago and there was a genuine concern that due to his new appointment he may have to decline the gracious invitation.

“Thankfully he kept faith with the appointment enabling it to be both a historic and memorable occasion.”

The presentation of a music copy of the hymn book “Singing the Faith” and a painting by local artist Norman Brewster, a member of the church, was made at the end of the service.
