Former Darlington town clerk dies, aged 93

A FORMER Darlington town clerk has died, aged 93.
Ernest Mansfield served as civil defence co-ordinator for the borough in the 1970s and was assistant town clerk at Darlington Borough Council until his retirement in 1983.
He attended Darlington Grammar School and joined the council in 1936 at the age of 17 to work in the motor tax department.
When the Second World War broke out, he joined the Royal Army Service Corps as a volunteer, serving in the Middle-East and North-West Europe.
After the war, Mr Mansfield returned to the council and became the Mayor’s secretary in 1946.
He progressed to the role of electoral registration officer and was the returning officer for local and national elections for a number of years.
After retiring, Mr Mansfield moved to Cheshire in 2001 to be closer to his family.
He leaves behind his wife, Stella, son, Derek, two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
