Young footballers triumph again

TALENTED young footballers have helped their school win a five-a-side tournament for the fourth year in a row.

Members of Hurworth School’s year eight girls five-a-side team beat competition from St Aidan’s, Hummersknott, Longfield and Darlington School of Mathematics and Science in the tournament on Monday (January 14).

Hurworth won all their games without conceding a goal.

Head of PE Tony Liddle said the young players have a history of sporting achievement, with one team member playing for Middlesbrough FC’s academy and others affiliated to local sides.

He said: “They are all good friends and started playing football from such a young age, the fact that they also play football together on a weekend has also help to improve their skill level.

“They are all lovely girls who love PE and all sports, not just football.

“Many of them have been identified as being gifted and talented in PE.”

“They all have their individual strengths and that’s what makes them work together as a team so well.

“The girls gave it their all and I am proud of each and every one of them. I'm looking forward to see them improve as a team and go on to greater success.”
