Work to start on masterplan for Stanley
4:10pm Friday 18th January 2013 in News
WORK will start next month on the first stage of a plan designed to breathe new life into a town.
Pavements in the Front Street area of Stanley are to be improved and new seating and bins installed.
Durham County Council says work is due to start on February 4, the first stage of the recently-announced Stanley Masterplan project.
The plan, agreed following extensive consultation with residents, includes plans for Stanley Academy, a new Customer Access Point, proposed retail development on Clifford Road and several key improvements to the surrounding roads.
There will also be targeted support offered to help businesses in Stanley improve their premises and fulfil their potential.
The Masterplan has been boosted by the contributions of Councillors John Hunter and Joe Wilson. Cllr Hunter donated £23,500 from his Members Fund to the project with Cllr Wilson contributing a further £10,000.
Coun Neil Foster, Cabinet member for economic regeneration, said: "It’s great to see work starting on much needed improvements, showing our continued commitment to the Stanley area.
"I am sure the work we’re carrying out will create a much better town centre for the people and businesses of Stanley."
