Chance to comment on new North Yorkshire police budget

PEOPLE have until the end of this month to comment on the first budget proposed by North Yorkshire’s new Police and Crime Commissioner.

Julia Mulligan has said she intends to freeze the police precept for the coming year (2013/2014).

She said: “I have looked very closely at the police budget for the next year, and thanks to good financial management and better than expected funding from the Government, I am confident we can press ahead without increasing the precept.”

“By not increasing the precept, the Government will offer North Yorkshire Police a grant of £618,000. This will be extra money coming in without have to go cap in hand to the hard pressed public. ”

A draft proposal for the force can be seen at; http://www.northyorkshire-pcc.gov.uk/index.aspx?articleid=10492 where North Yorkshire residents can email their comments on the proposal via the add a comment page.

The deadline for comments is January 28.

The commissioner will formally make a proposal about the police council tax precept by February 1 to the Police and Crime Panel.

The panel has the power of veto over the commissioner’s proposals and a final decision over the budget will be made later in February.
