A FORMER mayor has been honoured for more than four decades of service to a charitable trust.
Honorary Alderman Colin Beswick MBE, who was Mayor of Durham in 1970 and Durham’s town crier for seven years, served on the Durham City-based Shakespeare Temperance Trust (STT) for 41 years, including 31 as its chairman.
He retired at a recent STT lunch at which, in recognition of his efforts, he was presented with an inscribed silver salver.
Incoming chairman Frank Davison said Mr Beswick had given the STT excellent work and dedication.
During Mr Beswick’s time, the STT oversaw donations of around £750,000 to local charities.
Mr Beswick has also previously been a local headmaster, Rotary club president, city councillor for more than 40 years and chairman of Durham Scouts.
