WORK on the eagerly anticipated £2m makeover of Newton Aycliffe town centre is likely to start within two weeks.

The makeover, which is expected to start on February 4, will see the unsightly concrete ramp linking Upper and Lower Beveridge Way demolished, along with the ramp linking Upper Beveridge Way to the car park and the spiral staircase.

Heavy shop canopies, existing trees and street furniture will also be removed and the concrete paving flags will be taken up in stages.

In its place, Freshwater, the company that owns Aycliffe Shopping Centre, will create a clean and pleasant open plan shopping area, incorporating attractive street furniture, artwork and trees.

There will also be improved street lighting, a new spiral staircase, further refurbishment work to retail units and the relocation of Coffee Pronto to a ground floor unit.

Work is scheduled for completion in November.

Town centre manager Bryan Haldane said the team was excited to see their plans come to fruition.

“At a time when town centre retailing has been under pressure nationally and major retail chains are closing the landlords have demonstrated their continued commitment to Newton Aycliffe by pressing ahead with major projects such as these,” he said.

Mr Haldane said management were working with existing tenants to ensure they benefit from the improvements, adding: "We have had enormous support from Durham County Council, our local MP Phil Wilson and the retailers all of whom are very keen for the works to get underway

The people of Newton Aycliffe finally deserve a decent town centre, especially due to the the size of the town.
I also think that the town should regain it's Newtown economic status to try & re-establish it's industrial estate. However, what do I know? I'm just another person in this town.

Just would like to point out that Newton Aycliffe has never had a KFC or Burger King,or even a WH Smiths. Perhaps if we could have these in the town centre it would do wonders for the town as the nearest ones we have are in Darlington. And we do have a mcdonalds yes but even then its on a busy motorway which to few people can get to without a car or bus.

Placing these in the town centre would help a lot and would allow some of the many empty shopping units to be filled generating revenue for Freshwater that they would lose leaving the spare shop spaces empty.

Also give the ramp a fresh lick of paint and if possible retile it and use the spaces above it for additional businesses. Why demolish it when it can be put to good use and be a nice little revenue earner.

I moved to Newton Aycliffe recently having lived in Bishop Auckland for over 40 yrs. I saw the slow deterioration of Bishop Auckland town centre and also the Newton Aycliffe town centre. Bishop Auckland now has the new St Helens out of town shopping centre which is adding to the demise of Bishop town centre. I welcome the proposed upgrade of Newton Ayckliffe shopping centre but I do not believe any major retailers will move in because of St Helens. I think new thinking is needed to re-vitalise town centres but I do not see Durham County Council or private landlords having much effect other than a make over from time to time.
