Council tax on agenda at meeting

A FULL meeting of Darlington Borough Council will be held on Thursday (January 31), at 6pm, at the town hall. Members will discuss the authorities council tax base for 2013/14, with the level of council tax to be finalised in March.

DANCE NIGHT: A ceilidh in aid of Diabetes UK will be held at Darlington and Simpson Rolling Mills Club, in Longfield Road, Darlington, from 7.30pm to 11pm, on Friday, March 1. And are these greedy snouts in the council tax trough councillors going to reverse their decision to charge some of the poorest people in the borough £160 a year?

Or are they going down in history as a labourf concil who would rather see people go cold and hungry?
They make Margaret Thatcher look benevolent.

And before the usual neo fascists get in we do pay the full council tax out of a very small pension. We just don't see why the poorest should be taxed to pay some councillors £30000 a year and all of them over £8000.
Sheer greed.

I dont object to helping those in genuine need (and I mean genuine!) but not at the expense of those hardworking taxpayers who pay the full council tax rate, of whom the council generally look towards to pick up any shortfall. At least the council cant impose more than a 2% rise without a referendum. If only that rule applied between 1998 & 2007 when council tax rose by over 120% with double figure rises every year! There is still huge wastage and exorbatent wages and expenses that could trim millions more from the budget if those in receipt and power could take their noses out of the trough long enough and not put themselves for once!!! But thats not going to happen so be prepared for bad news.

In spite of it supposedly being a democracy in reality a labour council in Darlington knows it is in a position to do as it pleases and does so. The services are appalling for the money that is paid.

With housing benefits being paid direct to tennants and a council tax charge on low income families being introduced, coupled with falling benefit levels and dwindling job opportumities, evictions will follow and the consequences don't bare thinking about

Lots of homeless people and rising crime are an inevitable consequence. (The police of course will diddle the crime figures).

At least if everyone has to pay something it might stop them for blindly voting Labour. Who cares how much money the council wastes and passes on to the taxpayer if your share of it is nothing?

They will be meeting to decide how they can fiddle the figures to get an above 2% council tax increase without having to have a referendum..They can legally do this by putting up the elements of the Council tax that are not subject to the 2% rule and then adding this inflation busting rise to a probable 1.99% increased Council tax giving an overall increase well above 2%.
