Revellers held in Saturday night drugs operation
11:50am Monday 28th January 2013 in News
TWO men were arrested as police screened Durham city centre revellers for drugs.
The pair, aged 38 and 34, were held on Saturday night on suspicion of possessing drugs and were later cautioned.
Six other people were stopped and searched after a drugs dog gave a positive indication, but no drugs were found.
Police say the operation, carried out ar bars and pubs in Walkergate, Market Place, North Road and Saddler Street, was a success.
It involved a team of officers and special constables, including a dog handler and a passive drugs detection dog.
PC Darrell Brown said: “We are committed to keeping Durham City free of the scourge of drugs. “There will be similar operations in the coming weeks, working in partnership with the force’s licensing unit, door staff, venue operators and other personnel within licensed premises in the city.
“During this operation it was clear from our interaction with members of the public that they were supportive of our action.
“They responded very positively and were keen to hear about the work of the police dog.”
