Waxathon at Carmel College raises funds for student's gap year trip to Chile

TEACHERS and pupils at a Darlington school braved a mass leg wax as part of a student’s gap year fundraising mission.

During the event - dubbed a waxathon - at Carmel College, ten teachers and 15 sixth form students had their legs waxed to raise money for second-year college student, Amy Hudson, who is heading to Chile, in South America, to spend a year teaching disadvantaged children.

The 17-year-old, from Darlington, was chosen out of thousands of applicants for the placement with the Project Trust, but needs to raise £5,400 to pay for her trip, which will be used to fund education in South America.

She said: “It went really well, we had queues out of the door to get in before it even started.

“It was good to get the teachers involved as well. The event raised £135.32 and I am still waiting for some sponsors from teachers.”

Miss Hudson has so far raised more than £1,000 and hopes to organise a number of carboot sales and other fundraisers over the next few months.

She will fly out to Chile in August with a group of Project Trust volunteers before moving into a host family’s home for the rest of the year with another volunteer.
