Initiative to help overweight children in Hambleton

A HOLIDAY club for children struggling with their weight is starting up in North Yorkshire.

The free MoreLife (CORRECT) club is for overweight and obese young people and aims to help them lose weight and learn skills that will enable them stay fit and healthy.

The classes for seven to 13-year-olds are running for the first time at Hambleton Leisure Centre in Northallerton during the February half term.

Children attend the sessions on their own and there will be flexible parents’ sessions on offer to help parents support their children. The programme is backed by NHS York and North Yorkshire.

Programme co-ordinator Lisette Vincent-Jones said: “We do 50 per cent activity, 50 per cent interactive sessions on things like food tasting.

“It’s long-term changes. We also do a lot on confidence-building and self-esteem.

“Demand elsewhere for these classes can be quite high. In Stockton and Middlesbrough there is a lengthy waiting list and it’s the same in places like Doncaster and Camden, where they’ve had to stop referring children.”

The new Hambleton district club runs from Monday, February 18 until Friday, February 22 from 9am until 5pm.
