Hannah Goram is competing in the regional heats of the national Future Chef competition
A SCHOOLGIRL is facing the heat of the kitchen as she vies for glory in a national chef competition.
Longfield Sports Academy student Hannah Goram, 14, has made it through to the regional heat of the Future Chef contest being held at Sheffield Catering College on Thursday. (February 14)
The annual competition is designed to encourage the next generation of chefs and catering staff and Hannah has been working on her menu with help from Longfield catering teachers and her Darlington College mentor John Paul.
She said: “I took GCSE in year nine and AS Level in year ten which really got me into cooking.
“My dad is a really good cook – but my mum gets me my tea – and I would love to own my own restaurant one day.
“I really love cooking fish and my signature dish is salmon with lime and chilli, which is what got me through to the regional heats.”
On Thursday, Hannah will serve the judges pan seared sea bass with vegetables and a lemon possett with meringue for dessert, along with an amoretti biscuit.
Darlington College catering tutor John Paul has high hopes for his protégé and said: “She is very keen to learn and I can’t fault her.
“She loves cooking and does it very well indeed for a 14-year-old.
“She has good skills and is very precise on her timings and I am sure she will do well.”
Last year, Longfield student Ruth Hansom reached the London final of the competition and this year’s national final will take place next month at Westminster Kingsway College.
