Church members set for fundraising leap of faith
1:02pm Tuesday 19th February 2013 in News
CHURCH members and leaders are preparing to take a ‘leap of faith’ in support of the work of a youth group.
Up to 50 people are expected to take part in a sponsored abseil on Saturday, March 2, to raise funds for the Darlington Area Churches Youth Ministry, a youth project set up five years ago by local churches to work with the young people of Darlington.
Amongst the participants are several church leaders including the Reverend Robert Williamson, vicar of St Cuthbert’s, Phil Hillsdon, pastor of Kings Church and Linda Donaldson, minister of Darlington Baptist Tabernacle.
Martin Stand, project director of Darlington Area Churches Youth Ministry, said: “It is that the youth ministry is supported by all the major denominations and this is reflected in leaders of churches from different traditions coming together to support our work.
“The Leap of Faith is a unique opportunity for participants to abseil down the interior of St Cuthbert’s Church and we are extremely grateful to St Cuthbert’s for allowing us to use the building in this way - there won't be many opportunities to abseil down the interior of Darlington’s Civic Church.
“The work of Darlington Area Churches Youth Ministry continues to develop; we work in three local secondary schools and in the QE Sixth Form College.
“A key aspect of our work is getting alongside pupils who need encouragement and assistance with their studies and supporting them in their personal and social development.
“We also offer schools weekly lunchtime activities and regular assemblies. The work keeps growing and later this year we are hopeful of increasing our team of full-time workers.”
It is not only church leaders that are going to join the fun – nine-year-old Caleb Stand is the youngest participant signed up so far.
