POLICE have seized three bin bags full of alcohol during a crackdown underage drinking in a village.
Officers are targeting the area around the leisure centre, in Sherburn Village, near Durham City, where groups of youths have been congregating for the last few weeks, particularly on Friday nights.
Last weekend, officers from Sherburn neighbourhood policing team seized enough bottles an cans to fill three large plastic bin bags.
PC Waheed Mughal said: "On one occasion there were as many as 30 young people hanging around the centre, many of whom had been drinking alcohol.
"As well as breaking the law by drinking under age they are causing damage to property in the area.
"These young people need to know that such behaviour will not be tolerated.
"The neighbourhood policing team is taking a robust approach to deal with this problem and will be carrying out high-visibility patrols in the vicinity."
